EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Pretty Pretty Designs

Who or what inspired you to start a business?

I had the idea to start making jewelry about 13 years ago. But marriage, children and just life set that idea back about 10 years. About 3 years ago, when my youngest started school full time I decided I needed to do something for myself, yet still be available as full time mom. So I began my journey into the field of handcrafted jewelry. I believe that God put the idea in my head. As my relationship with Him grew stronger I wanted “cool” jewelry to represent my faith. So I began creating jewelry that was “Faithful, yet Fashionable”

How did you get started?

I was visiting a friend in Ohio who had just closed down her craft store. I was rummaging through her left-over stock and it was full of beads and tools and all kinds of goodies for jewelry making. I told her about my vision of making jewelry and she said “take it”. So I bought myself a book and started teaching myself to make beaded jewelry. My first creations were made after putting the kids to bed I would sit on the living room floor and just create, eventually moving to a small desk in the corner.

I figured I would just keep practicing until all the kids went to school full time, but it all happened before I was ready. My mom bought a necklace for a friend of hers that was battling cancer; it was a pretty turquoise bead necklace with a “Believe” charm and an angel wing. The woman was so touched; she absolutely loved it and decided that she wanted a “Pretty Pretty” necklace for all her family and friends that were supporting her through the toughest time in her life. She ordered 25 necklaces from me. And from there I was in business. It was way too soon, so I thought, but I have been creating one of a kind jewelry designs ever since. Through word of mouth I got a bunch of sales and then started home shows, craft fairs and then eventually my website and Etsy. That was 3 years ago, and I have never been happier in a career choice.

What tip or advice can you give someone starting out who wants to follow in your footsteps?

DON’T EVER GIVE UP!!! Follow your dreams and desires.

If you are given a gift to create beautiful things then use that gift. There is no better feeling than receiving a complement from someone or touching someone’s life because of something YOU created.

And work very hard!!! I have never worked as hard as I do right now. Every free minute I have is focused on Pretty Pretty. Whether it’s designing, creating, networking, updated my website, taking and editing pictures, etc. But I have to say I have never enjoyed a job more.

You can do whatever you want and be successful if you put your mind to it and stick with it!

What inspires you every day? Where do you find your inspiration?

I am inspired each day by so much. My faith, family, friends, nature and my vintage jewelry collection are what inspire me most. Pretty much everything inspires me.

Most of my pieces are faithful, spiritual & inspirational. I love my God and I wear jewelry that represents and reminds me of that. But sometimes faithful jewelry is delicate and simple; my background in fashion helps me to make it hip and trendy. I like to say that I make jewelry for todays “Spiritually Aware & Fashionable Consumer”.

I love to lift people up and heal, so I make jewelry that does just that.

My friends inspire my “rock star” and a “seashore” collection, my daughter inspires me to make little girls jewelry and my husband and my sons inspire me to make men’s jewelry.

Many of my designs are inspired by my collection of vintage jewelry. I started collecting them because I had a few antiques from both of my Grandmother’s and I love them so much. So whenever I am in an antique store and something catches my eye, I add it to my collection. Aside from rings I pretty much only wear Pretty Pretty and vintage. Both are unique and one of kind, I like that.

Who are your role models and why?

I can’t really say that I have a role model. I am who I am because of me. I work very hard not only in my business but on myself personally. I don’t think anyone is ever “done” being the person they are going to be. I strive each and every day to be a better person. I don’t aspire to be like anyone else, just the best “me” I can be.

I actually have a magnet on my mirror on my desk that is an angel and it says “I am my own heroine”. I love that.

How do you find balance for running your business in your busy schedule?

Balance??? Ha-ha, what balance? I wouldn’t say I’m balanced, I’m busy, but in the best way possible. Besides my business I have 3 awesome children, Kohl, 17, Maximos, 9 and “Pretty Pretty” Ava is 8. I am blessed to have a wonderful husband that helps out around the house and with the kids when I need it. I work very “off” hours, especially in the summer. The joy of having my own business is that right now I work when I can.

A typical day for me right now is:

I usually wake up and have my coffee in bed with my laptop and TV. I check my emails, say my prayers watch my faithful TV shows and then start my day. From 8:00 to 11:00 I create jewelry, pack up orders that have to be shipped and whatever else needs to be done for business. And then from 11:00 on it is Playtime!!! We go in the pool, go to the beach or concerts and we hang out with our family and friends. We are very social and enjoy life to the fullest whenever possible. After the kids are in bed it’s back to my laptop to check on my websites, network, and research and plan what has to be done the next morning.

Once the kids go back to school my schedule will be more structured and will have much more “business” time in it.

Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?

I see myself having a very successful Jewelry business (God willing) and another business that I have in the works right now. I want to see my creations in “People Style-watch” and “In Style” magazine. I see my jewelry being sold in high end boutiques and on my website. In 10 years all of my children should be out of the house or in college so I hope to travel to awesome locations with my husband to find cool and unique components to work with.

Can you give us some word of wisdom for success? What are your biggest business triumphs, success, and mistakes? Have you ever made a business decision in the past that was a mistake? What are some of the BEST business decisions that you have made?

The best words of wisdom I can give are to work hard and stay focused. I have a very busy life, but no matter how busy I get my mind always has a little bit of business on it. I never put Pretty Pretty completely on the back burner.

My biggest triumph was an order of 65 custom pieces that I was asked to create for a woman’s retreat. I was honored. And being featured in this blog was pretty exciting too.

The most memorable thing for me was when I was asked to make a necklace for a young lady that was terminally ill. She loved her “Faith” necklace and said it was a blessing to her. Before she passed she asked to be buried with that piece. It is so touching to me, to know that there is an angel in heaven wearing a Pretty Pretty design.

I have only been in business 3 years and not to say I haven’t made mistakes but it’s been pretty smooth so far. I take my time with my business. I’m not in a huge rush to be an overnight success. I feel that helps me to make fewer mistakes. I research every aspect of my business before I do anything. I wear my jewelry before I sell it, to make sure it hangs the right way and it that it is sturdy. If I am not 100% satisfied with it, it goes into the redo pile.

I think my best business decision is to not be cheap with my supplies. I don’t mind paying for quality merchandise and that is the consumer I am targeting. And I guarantee all of jewelry. If anything happens to a piece I will remake it or fix it. I have been known to see something on a friend that doesn’t look great and I take it off them and make it perfect.

Most of my customers are loyal repeat customers that I have sort of built relationships with. I enjoy corresponding with my clients, not just making a sale. It’s more special that way; for me and them.

My actual workspace which is just a corner in my house.

A picture of the workshop I would love to have in my backyard some day.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: MESHE DESIGNS

Meet Shelly from MeShe Designs and find out what inspires her and how she got started doing what she loves.
  1. Who or What inspired you to start a business?
About five years ago I worked in a metaphysical store, surrounded by gorgeous handcrafted jewelry all day and night. I was truly inspired by my surroundings of luscious stones and silver to begin creating my own visions. Many people along the way have kept my inspiration fully charged, and allow me to continue to be inspired.

(I just LOVE her hair!!! )

2. How did you get started?
When I worked in the metaphysical store. We sold oodles of gorgeous handcrafted jewelry from different artists around the world. I was in love with jewelry display, the origins of the stones themselves, and the unique craftsmanship that was put into these treasures. Selling jewelry was second nature for me, my boss recommended for me to start creating some of my own designs. She started her business with making jewelry and it developed from there. So she provided me with a bead catalog and my affair with making jewelry began.

3. What tip or advice can you give someone starting out who wants to follow in your footsteps?
From a young age we may not know exactly what we want to be, but we sure do know what we love. I feel everyone is built with a particular specialty whether that’s drawing, speaking, nurturing others, playing sports, or taking charge. You want to develop those strong points, and utilizing them for the career you choose. If you love it follow it, there are so many variations you can use your gifts to make a promising career. Do what makes you feel good, what makes you smile whether in love or life. That’s when you truly reach satisfaction at anything including a job, always listen to your intuition.

4. What inspires you everyday? Where do you find your inspiration?
My passion for people is what inspires me; I love anything about communicating with others. I like to see others get joy and excitement out of the creations I make, it keeps me going even if the sales aren’t rolling in by the dozens ;) You see the appreciation and like a nurse when you make someone feel good, it soothes the soul. I have a great family, amazing friends, and a soul mate that I never want to do without. All these things create inspiration with there support it makes what I do easy. For creating, just about everything inspires me, my favorite inspiration for a necklace was from a bread tie. I was twisting and turning the bread tie until I came up with a bow. I then brought it to life with the original MeShe The Bow Necklace.

5. Who are your role models and why?
My mother and step father, we are a quirky family with unusual dinner table manners but we understand each other. My mother is superwoman if any one asks that’s who and what she is. Loving, lovable, understanding, appreciative, humble, and such a pain (that’s why we love moms!) My step father is an amazing man that has grounded my life in a time when I needed it most, forever a father in my eyes. He is the more business side, gives me the suggestions I sometimes don’t want to hear but I know are right. Tells me how to save money, and budget. When I really want to say I know that, when I don’t. Between the two of them I find the right balance of support.

6. How do you find a balance for running your business in your busy schedule? What does your daily schedule looks like?
I’m still working on the balancing issue; scheduling and timing are things that are always being reevaluated in order to utilize my time. Sometimes I don’t have enough time, but the harder I work now the more time I make for myself later. I recently have been working full time again so I can afford to invest in a treasure chest of tools and supplies.

Typical Day:
Coffee
Work 9-4:30
Drive home and jam out
Pictures
Designing
Uploading/Renewing/Updating Etsy
Ordering
Thinking
See my boyfriend, or friends or both and by this time im exhausted

6. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 to 10 years?
In the next five to ten years I see myself successfully running my own business, complete with wholesale accounts, consignment deals, jewelry parties, and a busy Etsy store. I would like to travel a lot with my lover, we enjoy our time together so anywhere and in between. I want to laugh forever because that’s what he makes me do, a house by the water in New York with a hammock, a backyard studio and one dog.

7. Can you give us some word of wisdom for success? What are your biggest business triumphs, success, and mistakes? Have you ever made a business decision in the past that was a mistake? What are some of the BEST business decisions that you have made?
Words of wisdom, I would say planning whether its a formal business plan or simple outlines. These tactics are a great way to organize your thoughts and objectivly see the outcome of the changes you implement. Having an organized agenda allows you to stay focused and streamlined, and really see whats working for your business. The biggest mistake so far, is that I ignore the more mundane tasks. Whether that be inventory, filing, updating spreadsheets, or organizing my space. Its easy to get caught up in the designing, creating, uploading on to etsy, but ignoring simple paperwork can make for a lot of loose ends. The best decision I made to far is that I have made my Etsy shop a priority. I really try and update my facebook, twitter, and shop frequently during the week. I have noticed a significant difference in hearts, views, and sales.

I have a whole other side to my spare bedroom with beads and storage, but I am currently re organzing that space.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW & FEATURED SHOP: THE OTHER LOFT

1. Who or What inspired you to start a business?
It was actually by chance that I found out the joys of making jewelry! I was attending a 2 hour jewelry workshop with my girl pal and everything just fell into place!

2. How did you get started?

I had never meant to sell jewelries I made. But as my collection grew, I decided to try my luck on the now defunct Yahoo auction room. As soon as I felt there was more opportunity to sell my creations, I created a web page!

3. What tip or advice can you give someone starting out who wants to follow in your footsteps?

I feel that apart from having the passion and perseverance, knowing what you want out of life will be essential to anyone taking that leap of faith. Give yourself a time frame to try out something new. You'll never know what can be in store for you.

4. What inspires you everyday? Where do you find your inspiration?

Colors! I love colors! My inspiration can be from my wardrobe or by pure imagination of what I want to create.

5. Who are your role models and why?
There are many crafters I've come across who do exceptional crafting and deserves to be admired. However, I'm not sure if its a good or bad thing to have a role model as I've never particularly followed a style. So yeah, I guess I don't have one.

6. How do you find a balance for running your business in your busy schedule? What does your daily schedule looks like? (give us an example of a typical day in your shoes).

I'm a stay home mom. My priorities are my children - so I do a lot of chauffeuring to school and extra classes. In between chores, I'd find time to let my creative juices flow and also cook dinner for the family. I'm always in touch with my online shops and customers no matter how busy my schedule is because when you have a smart phone, there's no excuse not to!

7. I noticed that you were featured in a Seventeen issue. Can you tell us about that experience. How did they pick you. How did you find out that you were picked? And how has that changed your business/life?

Yes! My etsy shop was chanced upon by the fashion editor for October 2010 Singapore issue. They were scouring for fashion blog shops and I happen to fit the bill since my clay jewelries scream youthfulness! So I was contacted and many of my handmade items were sent to their office for a photo shoot. This was something very unexpected because I always thought you'd need to pull some strings to get noticed by a magazine!

I may also like to add that I was also nominated and awarded for being part of "100 Inspirational Women" during International Women's Day this year by Cozycot.com - a fashion and beauty portal based in Singapore. And just 2 weeks ago, Cozycot.com launched their maiden magazine and featured what I do in a full page photo shoot. It has been a truly humbling and exciting experience.

8. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 to 10 years?

I have not seen myself so far ahead! I'm happy to enjoy what I do on a day to day basis and hope to keep learning in my journey for many more years to come.

9. Can you give us some word of wisdom for success? What are your biggest business triumphs, success, and mistakes? Have you ever made a business decision in the past that was a mistake? What are some of the BEST business decisions that you have made?

Believe in yourself. It is important not to give up what you enjoy doing because that's your passion. No one can take your passion away from you!

My biggest success would be in 2009 when I created a blog to sell my handmade polymer clay beads. There had been a huge demand from local crafters, wanting to own exclusive beads that I made in small quantity and 95% of the beads I put up for sale twice weekly, were sold almost instantly. I regretted though, that I should have made more to cater to the many I had to turn down when the beads they liked were sold. In return though, I got to connect with many crafters who share what I love to do. After the trend to own polymer clay beads died down, I closed the blog and accepted customized orders instead. I still have orders for clay beads till today which I think is better for me now that I can focus on my jewelry making.

10. Do you have a picture of your design space? And/ or do you have a picture of your "dream" design space

I have a photo of myself here sitting by my dining table - that's where I do my craft. The cupboard behind me stores my treasured beads!

I've never had a dedicated to what I love to do so if I ever have a room for myself, I would like it to look like this!
